Where Are The Wise Men?

Mike's Ramblings

One Month As Tech Lead

| Comments

The main reason I haven't been blogged much lately is that I've been moved up to a Tech Lead position. I've been at the Big Bad Company for a little over a year, and have been given a promotion and an opportunity to Make Things Better(tm).

And, really, there is definitely room for improvement and I'm glad to know that my input is valued. Can I make them better? Not by myself but I do have a cohort to do the business side of things. He's working on the customer and non-technical side and I'm on the Agile and technical part of the fence. And on the fence is where we work together.

So here is how some things are different:

  • I spend less time developing software and more time fixing problems. For example, instead of writing code, I spend time helping people figure out why things aren't working, or hunting down a DBA who needs to approve a request.
  • I get to research and (hopefully) play around with tools that we may or may not use.
  • My time spent in meetings has greatly increased.
  • I'm now approving change requests!! More work for me, but better for everyone else since I'm available and, well, the Powers That Be go to more meetings than I do.
  • I have written more on a whiteboard in the past month than the past two years added together. It's because I'm the one doing the explaining, not because I'm being explained to.

All in all, it's been a good change for me -- I hope everyone else thinks it's been good for them, too.
